National Homelessness Week

National Homelessness Week (4-10 August 2025) is a crucial time to raise awareness about homelessness in Australia.

At Biyani House, we see every day the urgent need for support, as domestic and family violence forces many women and children into homelessness. But what is the scale of homelessness in Australia?

Did you know that on any given night, 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness? It's heartbreaking to think that one in seven of these individuals are children under 12 years of age. And nearly one in four are young people between the ages of 12 and 24.

In Australia, domestic and family violence (DFV) is one of the main drivers of homelessness in Australia. Domestic and family violence was the main reason more than 39% of people sought help from a specialist homelessness service in 2021-2. Alarmingly, one in six women, compared to one in 16 men, have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former partner.

At Biyani House, we see the devastating impact of these statistics firsthand. Since January 2022, we’ve provided accommodation for over 125 women and children, amounting to over 6,100 bed nights. Around 41% of the women who come to us are fleeing domestic and family violence, searching for a safe place to rebuild their lives. Sadly, 9% of these women have no source of income when they arrive, and 11% have been couch surfing in the month prior to getting to Biyani House, with nowhere stable to stay.
